Meet from 9:00am-12:00pm on October 26th at the Kiwanis Nature Park to help with some Fall effort in the pollinator garden; Native Plants IN and Invasives OUT. Registration will occur on site. There will be a big "Larry the Roanoke Logperch" banner marking the spot – (that promotes Larry's message of Only Rain Down the Drain). Volunteers will be awarded a copy of our children's book (in hot demand for how it delights youngsters and educates them about the plight of the threatened little darter fish that calls the Roanoke River its home). This should be a fun and productive activity for all ages.
Join members of our Environment Committee, the Clean Valley Council, and Roanokers for the Fall Waterways Cleanup on October 5 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Meet at the upper parking lot at Washington Park near the intersection of Carver Avenue and Burrell Street NW. This annual fall event encourages residents to clean up litter that might otherwise find its way to our rivers and beaches. Please invite your family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. Sign up sheets may be found on tables at our weekly lunch meetings.
Volunteer to work the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke booth at the Small Business Celebration & Awards Ceremony being held by the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce at the Berglund Center on October 17 from 3:00-7:30pm. This is an outreach opportunity for our Club to showcase itself to a large business oriented audience. To draw interest and attention, our booth will feature a cornhole game with our Kiwanis Club Logo on the inclined board; we will give out Kiwanis-logo prizes.
Meet at 9:00am on April 27th at the Kiwanis Nature Park to help do some Spring planting in the pollinator garden. Come ready to plant or prepare soil for planting. Bring your favorite gloves and garden tools. Hand shovels and gloves are provided. Water and snacks provided. We will plant about 50 plants. Should be finished by 12:00 noon. The garden is waking up and is a complete joy to work on to relieve the stress and tension of everyday life. The birds are singing and the bees are buzzing. Time for us to get buzzing This should be a fun and productive activity for all ages.
Meet at 10:00 on April 6th at the the Goodwill Youth Headquarters building located 2502 Melrose Avenue (next to the Kiwanis Nature Park and the Horton's Branch watershed). We will use provided grabbers, trash bags, and vests to clean up the Park and neighborhood; will finish by 12:00 noon.
Our Kiwanis Club is providing volunteers again this year to run a Blue Ridge Marathon Aid Station. We will hand out drinks and enthusiastically encourage runners. Our aid station is located part way up Roanoke Mountain. The shift starts at 6:45 and ends around 10:45 AM. You can drive up to the Aid Station by taking the Roanoke Mountain Parkway (on the right off the Blue Ridge Parkway just north of the intersection with Mill Mountain Parkway). Volunteers must be in place before the Blue Ridge Parkway closes at 7:00 AM. If 6:45 AM is too early for you, we also need at least three (3) Kiwanians to be course marshals and there are volunteer opportunities on other days including Friday night (April 19th) at the welcome concert. Meet at 10:00 on January 15th (Martin Luther King day) at the Envision Center located at 2607 Salem Turnpike (a short walk to the Kiwanis Nature Park and the Horton's Branch watershed). We will use grabbers, trash bags, and vests provided by Clean Valley Council; will finish by 12:00 noon. This event is being held in partnership with the Envision Center (Roanoke Redevelopment Housing Authority), Shiloh Baptist Church, SERV, Clean Valley Council, our district's Key Clubs, and the Aktion Club. Invite a non-club member to join you.
Meet at 9:30 on November 4th at the Goodwill picnic shelter at 2502 Melrose Avenue to sign in and get supplies and instructions (and muffins). Work between 10:00 and 11:00 to fill those orange trash bags with litter that threatens our precious environment and our Larry the Logperch endangered species. Afterwards, join those of us headed to Chris' Coffee and Custard restaurant on Ninth Street to reward ourselves for yet again showing that Kiwanis Cares and Makes a Difference.
