Every year we ring the bell to raise funds for the Salvation Army and we are looking for volunteers to help out every Friday during Dickens of a Christmas in downtown Roanoke. Shifts are December 2, 9, and 16 and last one hour starting at 5pm and ending at 9pm. We like to have two people per shift.
Volunteer to work the KPAD ticket sales booth at the December 3-4 Holiday Craft and Vendor Show at the Berglund Center. The show runs from 9am-4pm on Saturday December 3, and from 10am-4pm on Sunday December 4. This is the first year that Kiwanis has partnered with the Holiday Craft and Vendor Show for advance ticket sales. We will also be partnering with them for the May 6 Spring Craft and Vendor Show occurring simultaneously with the May 6 KPAD. This partnership has the potential to result in a new KPAD ticket sales record.

A half dozen able bodied volunteers are needed to meet at 4:30pm on November 3 in the parking lot behind the Forest Park Academy School at 2730 Melrose Avenue to spread black plastic sheeting over new sections of the Kiwanis Nature Park wildflower garden; the sheeting will be held in place with locally gathered tree limbs and small logs. This effort will dispatch of the grass and weeds in an environmentally friendly manner in preparation for Spring plantings. Work should be completed within an hour. Wear your work gloves.
Join our Kiwanis Club and the Melrose neighborhood for this year's Fall Festival being held from 11:00am-1:00pm at the Melrose Library next to the Kiwanis Centennial Playground and Kiwanis Nature Park. Free food, books, candy, face painting, and pumpkins will be offered. Opportunities will be provided for festival goers to view the preliminary design schematic for the Kiwanis Nature Park and provide feedback; this Nature Park will be a community asset that will reflect the community inputs. Volunteers for this event are very much needed to share the Nature Park dream with the Northwest neighborhood community. Meet at the Goodwill picnic shelter at 2502 Melrose Avenue. We are again partnering with Clean Valley Council to do a Horton's Branch Watershed Clean Up AND a Save Our Streams training. We will certainly look at our environment with great intention on that date to not only remove litter but to study the quality of water through invertebrate observations and monitoring. The creek we will clean is adjacent to the Goodwill Youth HQs. Come and learn to see with a new kind of purpose! We will then track the changes over time as we follow the impact of our project. Support worldwide refugees coming to Roanoke by running or walking in this Welcoming Week 2022 inaugural event on September 9. All proceeds go to support families currently being evacuated to Roanoke. The kids' 1K race will begin at 6:00PM, and the 5K fun run/walk will start at 6:20PM. All are welcome. Registrants before August 24 will receive T-shirts and finisher medals for all participants. The top runners in each age group will receive prizes as well. Kid-friendly activities include the kids' 1K, face painting, and free books! Packet pickup will be at the Main Library (706 S. Meet at the Goodwill picnic shelter at 2502 Melrose Avenue for a clean up of the Kiwanis Nature Park, Horton's Branch creek, and surrounding area. Arrive at 9:30am to sign in and get a snack. The clean up starts at 10:00am. We have gloves, safety vests, grabbers for you - and the trash bags! Come dressed for working in the creek and/or along the street - wear your bug spray, sunscreen and what's best for the weather. This will be a community engagement event.
A small core of volunteers will work with City personnel to install the remaining three interpretive signs along the Roanoke River Greenway; each sign will have a Kiwanis logo. The City will do the hard work (drill holes, deliver supplies). We will do the fun work (mix concrete, install signs). We will meet at 9:00AM at the 10th Street Greenway trailhead for the Lick Run Greenway (1498 10th Street NW); should be finished by 12noon.
Join us to help with athlete registration. The registration tent is located at River's Edge Park North. Volunteer for the morning shift from 8:00am to 1:00pm or/and the afternoon shift from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. Assist checking-in athletes during the registration process. Health Screening will also be incorporated into this shift. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: ID Check, mask and stylus distribution, QR code scanning, screening questionnaire validation, and temperature checks.
