Melissa Woodson, Director of RAM House, requests assistance with the final phase of preparing RAM House. Starting on Tuesday, September 1st, Kiwanians teams of volunteers will move canned goods by dolly from shipping containers to their permanent location in RAM House. We need people to unpack the containers and people to take the items by dolly down the alley to the RAM House for final storage. We will do this for two hours per day, starting Tuesday, September 1st at 1 pm each day until we have emptied the two containers (anticipated completion date is September 11 or earlier). Meet at 10:00 on September 12 at the Melrose Library for a two-hour clean up pf the Kiwanis Nature Park. We are partnering with SERV (Standing for Equity in the Roanoke Valley). All of the clean up supplies will be provided. All are encouraged to wear comfy/warm clothes and supportive shoes.
Help Blue Ridge Literacy by conducting student mock interviews. We will share our professional experience while helping learners practice their interview skills, build confidence, and receive feedback in a supportive environment. It is also a chance to connect with learners, hear their stories, learn about their goals, and get to know potential talent in our community. Kiwanian participation provides valuable real-world practice while strengthening community connections. Each mock interview session will run 30-45 minutes. Sessions will be conducted from 10:00am-12:00pm on September 22, 24, 28, and October 1. Volunteer for one or more sessions. BRL provides year-round English literacy classes for adults across the Roanoke Valley. Fun Committee event. Socialize at the Green Goat restaurant on August 25 from 5:30-8:00pm; we will go to Blue Cow for some ice cream afterwards. No cost is involved beyond what you order and pay for individually. This will be a good time to enjoy each other's company. Brings your kids and family members. This will also be a good time to invite a non-Kiwanian so they can see the fun side of our Club.
Join us as we build beds for the Sleep in Heavenly Peace organization from 8:30am-12:30pm on October 10 at their 622 Mohawk Avenue location. All tools and materials will be provided. No skills necessary. The organization will have trained volunteers on site to assist us as building 20 beds. We’re looking for 30 Kiwanian volunteers to help. SLHP is a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need. All volunteers must use this signup link to provide an accurate head count; it includes the waiver required by the organization.
Offsite for Club leadership to plan for upcoming year. Board members and selected Committee Chairs meet from 10:30am to 1:30pm in the Western Virginia Water Authority Board room. A short board meeting will be followed by the planning session. Invitation only.
We are looking for a big crowd of Kiwanis members and the public to attend the Mill Mountain Star Dedication ceremony. We will be unveiling to the public the new plaque honoring Nancy Agee (former CEO of Carilion Clinic); she will give emphasis to the nursing profession. The Mayor and other dignitaries are expected. The press is invited. The dedication ceremony begins at 10:00am at the Star visitor platform. This is an excellent opportunity to invite a guest to see some of what makes our Club special.
