SUMMARY:NATURE PARK GARDEN PLANTING
DESCRIPTION:Meet from 9:00am-12:00pm on October 26th at the Kiwanis Nature Park to help with some Fall effort in the pollinator garden; Native Plants IN and Invasives OUT. Registration will occur on site. There will be a big “Larry the Roanoke Logperch” banner marking the spot – (that promotes Larry’s message of Only Rain Down the Drain). Volunteers will be awarded a copy of our children’s book (in hot demand for how it delights youngsters and educates them about the plight of the threatened little darter fish that calls the Roanoke River its home). Bring gloves and a shovel if you have them. Muffins will be provided. \nThe access from the playground or Goodwill area has been blocked due to the construction on the Goodwill and Melrose Library parking lot. This is the reason we are directing you to use the entrance facing the side of Forest Park Academy’s side parking lot. Forest Park Academy has a driveway off of Melrose Academy.\n \nThis should be a fun and productive activity for all ages.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s Fun Day will be held on Saturday\, June 1 at the Melrose Library and the Envision Center (old Melrose Library) from 11 AM – 3 PM. It will feature multiple agency and organizational activities and entertainment for children and adults\, and food and drink will be provided to an anticipated 1\,000 people in the immediate area. \nTherefore\, we will need 8 – 10 Kiwanians to help with shelter/tent set up and take down\, the distribution of portable cardboard trash cans and other such activities beginning at 8 AM that morning. We also need volunteers throughout the day at a Kiwanis exhibit table and at the Nature Park and the Welcome table. Please sign up for a shift between 8:30 to 11:30; 11:30 to 2:00 or between 1:30 and 3:30. \nFor these purposes\, our volunteer gathering place will be in front of the Melrose Library at 8AM on Saturday\, June 1. \nWe will also need the use of 4 or 5 shelters/tents in an area adjacent to the Envision Center\, so if those are available for use from our membership and friends that day\, that would be extremely helpful. \nHere is the link to the Registration Form: https://forms.office.com/r/urBM79wMdm

DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Goodwill picnic shelter at 2502 Melrose Avenue. We are again partnering with Clean Valley Council to do a Horton’s Branch Watershed Clean Up AND a Save Our Streams training. We will certainly look at our environment with great intention on that date to not only remove litter but to study the quality of water through invertebrate observations and monitoring. The creek we will clean is adjacent to the Goodwill Youth HQs. Come and learn to see with a new kind of purpose! We will then track the changes over time as we follow the impact of our project. This will be a community engagement event. \n8:30 to 9:00 – Gather\, sign In\, get your gloves and grabbers and bags.9:00 to 10:30 – Clean up the Watershed either right in the creek (wearing boots) or Melrose Avenue or Lafayette Blvd.11:00 to 12:30 – Save Our Streams activity: learning how to monitor the water quality by looking for the invertebrates. \nPlease invite your family\, friends\, co-workers\, and neighbors.
